Video Security

Published Date: 5 December 2022

What is Video Security?

Video security refers to the use of encryption software and security systems to protect premium, copyrighted content online. Unauthorized access to your digital assets can negatively impact your revenue.

Suppose your video streams include sensitive or private content. In that case, protection is paramount—and successful distribution of live and on-demand video content depends on how secure your video streaming platform is.

Why is video security important?

Any digital asset online is vulnerable to copyright and infringement issues due to illegal hacking, piracy, and unauthorized distribution. Protecting online videos and streams from hazardous consequences is key for content broadcasters and VOD/OTT platforms to encrypt their content using top-notch security systems.

Video Streaming Security Tactics

  • DRM: It helps protect content rights by preventing unauthorized access, leakage, and distribution of copyrighted material. DRM-backed video streaming platforms restrict unauthorized devices, prevent screen recording, monitor how long a viewer can access content, and so on. Content broadcasters should look for multi-DRM platforms like PlayReady, FairPlay, and Widevine for security across different browsers & mobile OS.
  • AES encryption: AES encryption secures your video content with a special stream key. If a viewer does not have the right stream key, they can not view the content.
  • Password protection: This is the simplest solution to restrict access to your content. However, it should not be used as the primary security mechanism.

Other streaming security tools include SSL / TLS Encrypted Paywall, HTTPS Delivery, and Geo-blocking.
