Pay Per View Streaming

Published Date: 15 March 2023

What is Pay Per View Streaming?

The traditional video monetization model where users have to purchase temporary or lifetime access to stream any digital content is called Pay-Per-View (PPV) streaming. This model allows viewers to pay only for the content they want to watch without needing a subscription. Another popular term for this type of streaming is Transactional Video On Demand, also called TVOD for short.

How Does PPV Streaming Work?

This type of video monetization technique involves users selecting a video title they want to stream and paying a one-time fee upfront for access. The duration of access varies depending on the type of streaming plan purchased and the publisher's policies.
Some pay-per-view (PPV) streaming sites operate on a rental basis, while others offer lifetime access to their digital content for paying customers. There is also a hybrid model, where users have lifetime access to some content but must purchase or rent specific titles at different prices.

Benefits of Pay-Per-View Streaming

There are several advantages to using the PPV streaming model for both viewers and publishers:

Benefits for Viewers

  • Viewers have the option to purchase individual video titles for streaming rather than being required to buy an entire service package.
  • This allows for a better viewing experience, with smooth video transmission and minimal or no advertisements.
  • Users have the ability to curate their own viewing experience, with complete control over what they watch and when they watch it.

Benefits for Video Publishers

  • It is ideal for video creators and streamers who have a limited content library.
  • It offers improved revenue generation for individual video publishers.
  • Pay-Per-View (PPV) streaming model can generate recurring revenue as customers continue to renew their subscriptions.
  • Streaming events and concerts that use the PPV model have greater scalability potential.

Pay Per View vs. On-Demand Streaming

Pay Per View Streaming

  • PPV streaming is typically used for one-time events and concerts rather than ongoing content.
  • PPV streaming is typically focused on live events, meaning that viewers cannot pause, rewind, or fast-forward the digital content.
  • The cost of PPV streaming is generally higher than other forms of digital content, as it is calculated based on public demand.

On-Demand Streaming

  • On-demand streaming offers a range of digital content, including movies, concerts, TV shows, and more, which can be accessed at any time.
  • One of the key benefits of on-demand streaming is the ability to rewind, pause, or fast-forward the content, providing greater flexibility and control for the viewer.
  • Compared to other forms of media consumption, on-demand streaming typically offers more affordable pricing options, making it a cost-effective choice for entertainment.
